But here’s the question almost nobody thinks to ask: what does the third-party lab report actually show? Tested for what, exactly? By whom? When? And most importantly, can you actually see the report?
Most of the time, the honest answer is: the brand won’t tell you. And that silence says more than the claim ever did.
Why Most Supplement Brands in India Won’t Show You Their Lab Reports
There are a few reasons. Not all of them are intentional. None of them are reassuring.
The testing was never done.
Some brands print “third-party tested” on a label because there’s no regulatory requirement to prove it. In India, supplement regulation under FSSAI is improving, but enforcement is inconsistent and the gap between what a brand claims and what it can demonstrate is often significant.
The results weren’t good enough to share.
A brand that runs tests and then doesn’t publish them is making a choice. If the product passed cleanly across every parameter, there’s genuinely no reason to keep the report private. The fact that so few brands publish is, itself, the signal.
Testing was done once- not per batch.
This is the most common version of the problem, and the hardest to spot. A brand might have run a legitimate test on an early sample or the first production run and never tested again. But ingredients change suppliers. Manufacturing runs vary. A report from batch one tells you nothing reliable about what’s in the bottle you’re holding six months later. Per-batch testing is the only version that actually means something.
The lab isn’t accredited.
A report from an unaccredited lab can say whatever the lab chooses. In India, NABL accreditation- National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories, means the lab itself has been independently audited for the quality and rigour of its testing methods. Without it, the report is just a document.
What a Real Lab Report Actually Checks and Why Each Test Matters
Most people who see a lab report for the first time aren’t sure what they’re looking at. Here’s what the key tests are actually for:
Contaminant Residue Analysis
The question it answers: are there pesticide or agricultural chemical residues in the raw ingredients?
This matters most for plant-derived supplements- borage oil, flaxseed, sea buckthorn, lichen. The raw ingredients in your capsule come from farms. How those crops were grown and what they were sprayed with affects what ends up in your body. Contaminant residue testing screens for this before the product reaches you.
Heavy Metals Residue Analysis- Lead, Mercury, Arsenic, Cadmium
The question it answers: does this product contain unsafe levels of heavy metals?
Heavy metal contamination is one of the most serious and most underreported quality failures in supplements globally. Fish oil and marine-sourced ingredients carry documented contamination risks if sourcing and purification aren’t tightly controlled. Plant extracts can absorb heavy metals from soil. This test is the check on both.
Microbial Contaminant Analysis
The question it answers: is the product free from harmful bacteria, yeast, and mould?
Microbial contamination can happen at the raw ingredient stage or during manufacturing. Tests check for total plate count, E. coli, Salmonella, and yeast/mould levels. A clean microbial report tells you the manufacturing environment was actually clean, not just claimed to be.
Oxidation Testing-TOTOX, Peroxide Value, Anisidine Value
The question it answers: has the fish oil degraded?
This one is specific to omega oils, fish oil and omega blends and it’s the most revealing test in the category. Oxidation happens when fatty acids are exposed to oxygen, heat, or light and begin to break down. A rancid fish oil doesn’t just smell unpleasant; research suggests oxidised omega-3 lipids may actively work against the reasons you’re taking them.
Oxidation is measured through three markers: TOTOX (a combined oxidation score that captures overall degradation), peroxide value (early-stage rancidity, how much the oil has started to break down), and anisidine value (later-stage breakdown products). Together they give a complete picture of oil quality.
Most fish oil brands in India don’t publish oxidation reports. Not because the tests aren’t available, they are, and they’re standard. But because the results require you to have sourced clean oil, stored it properly, and processed it carefully. The brands that skip this test are usually the ones that can’t afford to show it.
EPA & DHA Potency Verification
The question it answers: does the product actually contain what the label says?
Label potency shortfalls are more common than most supplement buyers know. Independent potency testing confirms that the EPA and DHA values printed on the label match what’s inside the capsule, batch by batch. Without this test, the label is a claim, not a verified fact.
FSSAI Compliance
The question it answers: does this product meet India’s food safety regulatory baseline?
FSSAI sets the minimum floor for supplement safety in the Indian market. An FSSAI compliance report confirms the product clears that floor. It’s a necessary minimum but it’s also a floor that many brands don’t bother documenting publicly, even when they’re required to meet it.
USFDA-Registered Manufacturing
The question it answers: was this made in a facility that meets international standards?
This isn’t a product test; it’s a facility standard. A USFDA-registered manufacturing facility has met the requirements of the world’s most rigorous food and drug regulatory body, covering equipment, hygiene controls, documentation, and process validation. It means the environment the product was made in has been externally assessed not just described on a website.
How to Check if a Supplement Brand Is Actually Safe- Four Questions That Cut Through the Noise
Next time you’re looking at a supplement brand’s quality claims, ask these four questions. They’re not complicated. But very few brands can answer all of them.
1. Will they actually show you the report or just the claim?
If the answer involves emailing someone, waiting, or being told it’s “Available on request”, that’s the answer. A brand that’s proud of its testing publishes the reports where you can find them without asking.
2. Is the lab named and independently verifiable?
Can you look the lab up? Is it NABL-accredited or internationally equivalent? A lab name you can’t verify shouldn’t be verifying anything for you.
3. Is testing per batch or a one-time exercise?
One early-sample test is a marketing asset. Per-batch testing is a quality system. Ask which one it is.
4. Does the testing cover what matters for that specific product?
A fish oil brand that tests for heavy metals but not oxidation is testing for the thing that looks good on a label not the thing that determines whether the product is actually working. Match the tests to the product category.

What is TOTOX in fish oil testing?
TOTOX stands for total oxidation value, a combined score that measures how much an omega oil has degraded. It’s calculated from the peroxide value (early-stage rancidity) and the anisidine value (later-stage breakdown). A low TOTOX score means the oil is fresh and stable. A high score means the oil is oxidised and oxidised fish oil may not deliver the benefits you’re taking it for.
Why don’t most fish oil brands publish oxidation test results?
Because oxidation testing reveals the actual quality of the oil, its sourcing, storage, and processing. Brands that use lower-quality fish oil, or that don’t control storage conditions properly, typically can’t show clean oxidation results.
